The INCLUSEA TOOLKIT is ready to download!

We are pleased to announce that the INCLUSEA TOOLKIT is now complete.

Our website’s new RESOURCES section is now available with fresh content to dive into.

The INCLUSEA team, which is co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Sport programme, on its aims to enhance the exchange of knowledge among European adapted surfing organizations, is proud to release this tool to improve teaching methods, safety, equipment, and health outcomes for participants. A best practice guide for surf instructors who work with individuals with physical and/or sensory disabilities.

To achieve these results, the project went through several stages. First, we conducted an in-depth review of peer-reviewed journal articles on adaptive surfing and created an inventory of existing adaptive surfing programs worldwide. Then we analyzed this data and evaluated the implementation of these programs with eleven different surf therapy organizations. This evaluation helped inform the creation of a toolkit for surf educators.

The toolkit is designed to be a learning journey, starting with pre-planning stages and understanding the environment, team, and participants. It provides guidance on communication, welcoming participants, transitioning from the beach to the sea, and providing surf instruction while ensuring safety and enjoyment. Additionally, the toolkit offers guidance on evaluating the impact of adaptive surfing programs.

The toolkit can be used in its entirety or specific sections can be accessed based on program needs. It includes factsheets on different types of disabilities and checklists for self-assessing the accessibility features of surfing sites and creating an inclusive environment.

The factsheets were developed based on the evaluation of adapted surf programs, identifying best practices and strategies for overcoming barriers and improving teaching methodologies. The overall aim is to contribute to a more inclusive ocean and surfing community.
